Sir Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill was born on November 30th 1874 near Oxford as the son of the conservative politician Lord Randolph Spencer Churchill.
After finishing school Winston Churchill visited the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst.
At the age of 21 Churchill participated as a lieutenant in the cavalry in military campaigns on Cuba, in India and in the Sudan.
In 1899 and 1900 he was acting as a war correspondent in the Boer War where he was taken prisoner.
His escape made him famous all over Britain.
After he returned to Britain his political career started.
He was a member of the Conservative Party, later of the Liberal Party and back again of the Conservative Party.
Churchill took a leading part in laying the foundations of the welfare in Britain, preparing the Royal Navy for World War One and in setting the political boundaries in the Middle East after the war.
He served as Prime Minister from 1940 – 1945 and from 1951 – 1955.
He is celebrated for his leadership during the Second World War.
In February 1945, Churchill attended the Jalta Conference.
Here he met Roosevelt and Stalin.
The three leaders discussed military operations as well as the post war settlement of Europe.
Churchill is also famous for many books about the British history and politics.
In 1953 he received the Nobel Price for literature.
In the same year he was honoured as a knight.
From now on his name is Sir Winston Churchill.
He died on January 24th, 1965 at the age of 90 and was buried at Bladon near Blenheim Palace, his birthplace.
