Washington D.C.
Washington D.C. is the capital of the United States of America and isn’t a federal state. „D.C.” stands for the federal district of Columbia. The District of Columbia was named after Christopher Columbus, the discoverer America. Washington was named after George Washington the first president of the United States.
History
1783, the Philadelphia congress decided, that the nation needs a capital.
A 16 km big area was chosen, along the border of Virginia and Maryland.
President George Washington had chosen the place of the district.
Geography
Washington has an area of 177 square kilometers and 16 percent of it is water. There life ca. 575.000 inhabitants.
Buildings
Washington has many places of interest and is very significant for America.
For example the White House. It was built in 1792 for George Washington and lies in Pennsylvania Avenue.
It is the house for the presidents of the United States.
2.5 kilometers further, there lies the United States Capitol. It is a very big museum and is one of the most popular tourism purposes of the land. In addition, it’s the seat of the congress of the United States of America. Yearly from three to fife million people visit the museum. It was built during 70 years and should be the highest building in Washington D.C. But there are two building which are higher than the Capitol. This is the Washington Monument and the tower of the old Post Office.
Lincoln Memorial was built in 1922 and is a monument for Abraham Lincolns, the 16-th president of the USA. There is also a 5.80 meter high statue of seated Lincoln.
Washington monument is a white marble obelisk that is exactly between Capitol State Building and Lincoln Memorial. It was built for George Washington in 1884. Its 169.3 meters high.
