At first I will tell you the timeline of the construction of Notre Dame de Paris:
-1160. Bishop Mauice de Sully orders to demolish the original cathedral
-1163. The cornerstone is laid for Notre Dame de Paris and the construction begins
-1182. Apse and choir completed
-1196. Nave completed and in this year Sull dies
-1200. Works begin on Western Farcade
-1225. Western Farcade completed
-1250. Western Towers and Noth Rose Window completed
1250-1345. Remaining elements completed
Notre Dame de Paris (French for "Our Lady Of Paris"), often known simply as Notre Dame in English, i a gothic cathedral. Itīs the church in Paris, dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Notre Dame was one of the first gothic cathedrals and was built throughout the gothic period. Its sculptures and stained glass show the heavy influence of naturalism. Notre Dame is widely considered the finest eyample of Frech gothic architecture.
The construction of Notre Dame de Paris began in 1163, during the reign on Louis VII.
The two transept windows o Notre Dame were built between 1250 and 1260. These Rose Windows are notable for being one of the few stained glass windowsin the cathedral that still have their original glasswork. Notre Dame de Paris is 130 m long, the main vault is 34 m high and the towers of the Wetsern Farcade are 69 m tall.
The bell "Emmanuel"in the South Tower weights over 28,000 pounds and 422 steps lead to the very top of the Bell Tower.
In 1793, during the French Revolution, the cathedral turned into a"Temple of Reason" and many of its treasures wer destroyed or stolen. Several sculptures were smashed and destroyed and for a time Lady Liberty replaced the Virgin Mary on several altars.
A restoration program was initiated in 1845, overseen by the architect Eugene Viollet-le-Duc.
