Summary of The Hound of the Baskervilles
Summary:

This is a summary of a book written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He writes about the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. This time Holmes solved a mystery of an old legend about the Hound of the Baskervilles. Everything begins with the arrival of Dr. Mortimer. He reads in an old manuscript about the Hound of the Baskervilles. The legend tells that Hugo Baskerville kidnapped a girl, but she managed to escape. When he rode after her, a big hound began to chase him. When Hugos friends caught them, the girl had died , and the big dog stood over Hugo, ripping his throat out. Sir Charles died of a heart attack, but Dr. Mortimer believed that something had frightened him to death. The doctor says that because he had found tracks of an enormous hound nearby. After Dr. Mortimer had left the building, Holmes decided to try to solve the mystery. He sends Watson to investigate the case, and pretends to stay at home. Before they leave he orders Watson to send him a message when something new happens. Holmes travels after them, but stays hidden in a hut nearby. He's watching everything. While Watson stays with Sir Henry, a prisoner escapes. This complicates the case. The Halls servants is related to the convict, and they feel obligated to help him with food and clothes. They try to hide it from Sir Henry, but Watson and Sir Henry catches them, thinking that it might have something to do with the case. They get to know that it was not so, and Sir Henry gives the male servant some clothes to make everything alright again. During his investigation Watson finds out that someone is hiding in a hut not far from the Hall. He is surprised to find out that it is Homes who is hiding there. When they talk together about the case, Holmes thinks he has solved the mystery. When they discuss how to set a trap for their main suspect, Mr. Stapleton. They hear a scream which they think comes from the Hound of the Baskervilles. Holmes and Watson runs after the scream and find a man dead. He is wearing Sir Henrys clothes, and Holmes and Watson thinks it is Sir Henry. When they get to know that it is not Sir Henry, they find out that the convict is dead. Holmes gets even more sure that Stapleton is the murderer.
Holmes thinks that Stapleton tried to kill Sir Henry, by letting the hound sniff some of Sir Henry’s clothes (he had stolen a boot), and then send the hound to beat him down and kill him. Instead of Sir Henry the dog killed the convict, because he was wearing Sir Henry’s clothes. The next morning Holmes instructs Sir Henry to walk alone home from the dinner he is invited to by Stapleton. Holmes and Watson give everyone the idea that they are leaving, but instead they hide and gets ready to catch Stapleton and kill his hound. At the morning Holmes asked a police man to join them in the evening, and he said yes, after hearing Holmes’s plan. The police man joined them, and were glad to finally getting the mystery solved. When the evening comes, all three stands, with their pistols ready, in some bushes not far from Stapleton`s house. When Sir Henry walks home from Stapleton, Stapleton unleashes his hound. The three friends saw this and cuts them off and kills the hound. They went to his house, but he had disappeared of course. They spread out and began to search for him, when they suddenly heard an awful scream. They ran after the sound, and found him running in the moor.
