Geographic:
Canada is in the north of America and very large. With its almost ten millions of square kilometers, it is the second largest country in the world after Russia. There are 10 provinces . (Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Newfoundland). The capital of Canada is Ottawa. There are also lot of big cities, like Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Edmonton.

Population:
But not a lot people live there, just 33 millions, because in the north its too cold and the land is very different. Plains with farm land are there as well as big mountain ranges, lakes and rivers. A lot of the world’s fresh water belongs to Canada.

History:
Before Canada was discovered by the Europeans, there only lived Indians and Inuit’s in Canada. They lived from hunting and fishing. The Vikings have been the first Europeans who were in Canada. 500 years later the Englishmen came to the country and 100 years later the Frenchmen came there, too. The Englishmen settled in the south of Canada. They lived from farming. The Frenchmen lived at both sides of the “St. Lorenz Strom!” Today Canada is a country, where u speak French and English in different parts.

The national symbol of Canada is the maple leaf. It ´s important since 1965. You see this maple leaf very often in Canada.

Sport and free time:
Canada is a land of lakes and rivers, trees and mountains, so the Canadians enjoy being outside in the fresh air in both winter and summer. The wilderness is never very far from the city . People who work all day in the city ,can, in every short time, get away from it all and go fishing on a quiet lake.
Summer sports include baseball, football, tennis, lacrosse (that game comes from an old Indian game), golf, biking and lots of kinds of water sports, like water skiing, scuba diving, white water rafting, canoeing and sailing.
Ice Hockey is very popular in Canada. Many people play this and they are very good at this. The Canadians like it so much, that they print a picture of Ice hockey on the money.

The huge mountain ranges in the eastern areas are the Torgat Mountains, the Appalachians and the Laurentians. In the west there are the Rocky Mountains and the Mackenzie Mountains. The Pelly Mountains and Mount St. Elias are in the north. The highest mountain is Mount Logan in the Yukon - territory.

The big lakes
There are a lot of big lakes in Canada. The biggest is Great Bear Lake.

Big cities
Toronto is the biggest city in Canada with 4,26 million, then Montreal (3,33 million), Vancouver (1,83 million), Ottawa - Hull (1,01 million) and Edmonton (860.000).

Sports
The most played sports are swimming, ice hockey, basketball, golf, cross - country skiing and skiing. The popular sports are football and baseball
