ideals of beauty - Referat

Today we will talk about the ideals of beauty.

Every culture has its own beauty ideal and every period of history held ist own standards on what is wasn`t considered beautiful.

During the Victorian era, the ideal body type for women was plump, fleshy, and full-figured. They wore corsets, which made waists artificially tiny while accentuating the hips and buttocks. These corsets also caused a variety of health problems with breathing and digestion.

By the 1960s, slenderness became the most important indicator of physical attractiveness because of some magazines like Playboy.

Between 1970 and 1990, there was an overall increased emphasis on weight loss and body shape in the content of a popular women's magazine, as well as a shift to using thinner less curvaceous models in their photo shoots.

Today in our modern Western society, 'thin is in' and artificial means such as liposuction have sometimes been used to lessen the appearance of hips, buttocks and fat in general.

In a word, today everyone wants to be slender, to have a blemish free skin without wrinkles and to have a ton.

How can you pimp yourself?
- different hairstyle(dreadlocks, permanent wave, iro, wigs)
- colored contact lenses
- make-up (lipgloss, mascara, puder)
- teeth bleaching
- lotions (anti-age cremes, body lotions, hand cremes)
- use asseccoires (rings, braces, necklaces, earrings)
- special clothes (designer labels, modern)
- piercings
- tattos

How can you fiddle with your problem zones?
- you have small breasts: wear wonderbras!
- you are little:wear high heels
- you are fat: don`t wear clothes that are too tight!
- you have pimples: wear make-up!
- you smell bad: use deodorants and perfumes

How can you achieve the body ideals?
- eat healthily
- do exercices (fitness-club, going jogging)
- go on a diet
- cosmetic surgery

Some more about current beauty ideals.

Standards of beauty have in fact become harder and harder to attain, particularly for women. The current media ideal of thinness for women is achievable by less than 5% of the female
population.
The point is, ideals are just someone's ideas (or beliefs) about how the world should be-not how the world really is!
The Thin ideal is damaging (to body image) because it is so narrowly defined, uniform, and hard to achieve, that hardly anybody fits into its specifications!
Our bodies are unique to us, and it is unhealthy for our body image, and self esteem to compare ourselves to a single (unrealistic) ideal.
For example you walk into a bookstore. You see the magazines and on the covers of these magazines, you see stick-thin models and headlines like “How to Lose 10 Pounds in 10 Days.” Even on the books you see titles like „The Best Diets and How to Look Like“.

Therefore it`s no wonder that in Germany 1,9 millions peole have eating disorders.
Anorexia and bulimia are the consequences of this thin ideal of beauty and in my opinion is
glamour a look, not a size. You don't have to be thin to be attractive.

What do you think of the phrase „today attractiveness often opens doors in business“?
